I am doing a sculpture project with younger kids and know if you mix plaster of paris with vermiculite it will soften it and slow the drying time, making it easier to carve. I can only find perlitewhich the garden store people say it the same thing gardening wise- but it is a rock whereas vermiculite is clay based. I have used the perlite added to plaster and was pleased with the results.
Especially when I added a shellac to the finished carving. The perlite took the shellac a little differently than the plaster and the end result was a bit of a stone look to the carving. I have not used vermiculite. I have used it as a high temperature insulator and people use it for a form of annealing of glass beads but I would expect it to argue with any sculpting effort if included in plaster.
You might ask a garden center if they could give you a handful to do a test run. Be aware that since it absorbs water, it will have to be soaked in water before mixing it with the plaster. You should be able to get your hands on coarse Perlite at your local Gardening supply store, if not let me know and I'll see what I can do to change that. You should be able to also find a medium grade at your local building supply center as loose fill insulation. Not speaking from experience but I would assume you would want the finer particle of the medium grade Perlite, often referred to as STP Silicone Treated Perlite.
